A Special Father's Day Message.

As we approach Father’s Day, we are reminded that our earthly fathers are our first model of the heavenly Father.  Some of us had wonderful examples of a father’s love and affection, so it was easy to believe the same of God.  But some of you have shared stories of earthly fathers who were physically abusive, neglectful, or just indifferent altogether.

Children of such fathers might view God as a critical judge, a distant deity who doesn’t know or care what goes on down here on earth, or someone who takes pleasure in kicking us when we’re down.  But our God isn’t like that.  He loves each of us deeply and personally. Scripture proves His love over and over:

Psalm 139:14-16

You were special to your heavenly Father before you were born. Don’t allow your earthly father to determine your value.

Matthew 10:30

Your heavenly Father knows how many hairs are on your head. If knowing the number of hairs on your head is important to God, imagine how much more important the rest of you is to Him.  Nothing about you, His child, is insignificant to Him.

Psalm 56:8

Your heavenly Father stores your tears in a bottle, he remembers all your grief.

Rev.

21:4

Your heavenly Father will wipe away all the tears from your eyes (personally). Picture yourself sitting on His lap with His arm around your shoulder. With the edge of His sleeve He dries your tears, reminding you that you are His treasure.

Psalm 103:12

Your heavenly Father forgives you. Really. How many times have you been reminded of the window your baseball broke 40 years ago?  Not God.  He forgets those things because He loves you.

Romans 8:15

Your heavenly Father adopted you and wants you to call him 'dad'. (I love that one).

Romans 8:17

Your heavenly Father made you His heir. He wants to share all He has with you.

James  1:12

Your heavenly Father will give you a crown.  You are royalty, a child of the King of the universe.

The story of the prodigal son paints a portrait of a loving father.  He ran to his son, not waiting for the son to approach him.  I believe when we get to heaven, God will run to us, joyful that we have come home to Him at last.

Don’t allow bad memories of the failings of your earthly father to rob you of the joy of being loved and cherished by your heavenly Father.  He loves you so much, He sent His blood Son to rescue you.  Not even the best earthly father could do that.
